Documentary - Voice / Performance Role

dr. arturo m. taca

Project Overview

Steak Guerrillas is a feature documentary chronicling the extraordinary life of Dr. Arturo M. Taca—a Filipino surgeon who fled to the U.S. after Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law, and from exile in St. Louis became a revolutionary voice in the Movement for a Free Philippines.

Blending interviews, archival footage, and animation, the film reveals his hidden fight against dictatorship, the toll it took on his family, and his enduring legacy as both healer and resistance leader.

Role Description - Dr. Arturo M. Taca

About the Character

Dr. Arturo Montemayor Taca (voice & performance reference, male 50s-60s). We are seeking an actor to portray Dr. Arturo Taca in the final years of his life. A Filipino surgeon in exile, Taca secretly became a revolutionary leader against Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship.

In his last years, while battling emphysema from decades of smoking, he began writing his memoirs, reflecting on his life as a healer, an exile, and a fighter for freedom.

This is not a traditional on-camera role. The actor’s voice performance will bring Dr. Taca’s memoirs to life, and their filmed performance will guide our animation team.

NOTE - the video above is simply for reference only. These interviews took place primarily in the 1980s, while the time period of the actor's performance is circa 1995-1997 as Dr. Taca wrote his memoir while battling emphysema.

Performance Qualities

  • Age / Voice: Mature, lived-in, believable as a man in his 50s with lung disease. His voice should carry both strength and weariness — the authority of a surgeon and leader, with the rasp and heaviness of someone weakened by emphysema.

  • Tone: Mature, measured, emotionally resonant – layered with strength and vulnerability. Reflective, intimate, expressing pride, regret, and conviction. This is a man writing in the twilight of his life, unburdening truths he carried for decades.

  • Accent: Filipino American preferred. Authenticity matters, but clarity for English-speaking audiences is essential. Sample recordings of Dr. Taca will be provided as guidance.

  • Style: We are not looking for impersonation. We want emotional authenticity — a performance that captures the essence of Dr. Taca’s character, not mimicry.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scripted narration adapted directly from Dr. Taca’s unpublished memoir.
  • Provide both vocal performance and recorded physical performance (face and upper body, no mocap suit required).
  • Collaborate with director during remote Riverside.fm sessions, adjusting pacing, breath, and tone as needed.
  • Allow use of recorded audio and video strictly for documentary production.

Commitment

  • Estimated line count: 1,000–1,500 words (approx. 20–25 minutes narration).
  • Time requirement: 2–3 recording sessions (2–3 hours each), plus pickups if needed.
  • Recording window: Fall 2025 (Late September– Early October).
